Hoop nets, used on basketball courts, were adopted in 1896. They were closed at the bottom because the point was only worth when the ball remained inside. Next to the basket, there was always a ladder or a stick for its removal. Soon after, a device was created to open the bottom of the net with the help of a string. The current format came into use in 1898.
