capuchin monkey (spajus nigritus) belongs to the Cebidae family and is considered one of the most intelligent primates in the Americas.
Species has two types of patterns in different regions. In the region north of the Paraíba do Sul River, capuchin monkeys have two raised tufts, as if they were “horns” on the head, and the coat is blackish-brown. In the southern region, however, they have fused tufts facing forward and to the side, with black hairs. Both have a black semi-prehensile tail.
It lives in flocks of eight to 16 individuals. It feeds on fruits, seeds, flowers, nectar, fungi, sap, eggs, insects and small vertebrates. It can be observed hitting nuts and hard fruits on logs and rocks and even removing insects from small holes using sticks. When moving away from the flock to feed, it maintains vocal contact, manifesting itself with a variety of sounds.
It usually stops in a bipedal position, but it is considered a quadrupedal animal. It scales very well and can jump up to three meters away.
During the reproduction period, the female has a gestation that lasts up to six months. Only one chick is born, which is carried by the parents or by another member of the group.
In Brazil, the species can be found in Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
