The witch who created Harry Potter
Shy and discreet, the English J. K. Rowling once lived on her unemployment insurance money. Today, thanks to her little wizard's success, she is richer than Queen Elizabeth.
One can start talking about J. K. Rowling tells how she created the most successful character of recent years, boy wizard Harry Potter. In late 1994, sitting with her young daughter in a dark, dusty cafe in Edinburgh, Scotland, her life didn't look very promising. Like thousands of would-be writers around the world, she dreamed of having at least one of her work on the shelves of bookstores. She just didn't imagine that the series of books she had been writing daily by hand, between sips of coffee, would make, a few years later, millions of children all over the world stopped watching television to be quiet enchanted by tales of flying witches, terrible dragons, magic brooms and cauldrons copper.
This story actually began many years earlier, on July 31, 1965. It was on that day that Joanne, the first child of Peter and Anne Rowling, was born in Chipping Sodbury, near Bristol, west of England. This date is important not just for the Rowling family. It's also a significant detail for the legion of Harry Potter fans – who, at the writer's whim, celebrate their birthday exactly on that date, giving hints that, to a large extent, the little wizard is an alter ego of his creator.
