Some are very organized and live in complex societies. Social insects are named for their organization, and include ants, bees and termites. The greatest diversity of these animals is present in Brazil.
In insect societies, labor is divided. Only a small group is able to reproduce, while the rest are responsible for taking care of the colony. In social species one or more queens are the only breeding females. Barren individuals are called workers, as they do all the work in the colony.
In some species of termites and ants, there is another group to defend – soldiers. Queens and soldiers often cannot feed themselves. The workers are in charge of bringing food for both, in addition to the young insects.
While females are divided into queens, workers and soldiers, males always do the same work. Their only function is to fertilize the queens and, in general, they die soon after this task is done.
Breeding the species is a collective effort by the entire colony. This means less genetic variability compared to species in which breeding is done by couples. Thus, individuals from the same colony have almost no genetic differences.
However, there are great advantages to organizing in partnership. After all, as a saying goes, union is strength. In a group it is easier to defend yourself and build a nest. Furthermore, the necessary jobs are carried out at the same time, while solitary insects do one thing at a time.
