Most populations of humpback whales have been removed from the endangered species list in which had been included nearly half a century ago, when they were at a historically low level due to hunting.
This status, assigned to animals at risk, is no longer justified for nine out of fourteen populations of these cetaceans that exist in the world, announced the NOAA (American Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency). The announcement was made in July this year.
However, four populations remain on the list of animals at risk of disappearing and one has been placed back in the endangered list.
“This decision marks a true ecological success,” said Eileen Sobeck, deputy administrator of the NOAA Fisheries Service in a statement.
“Whales, including humpbacks, play a very important role within our marine system,” added Sobeck. She says that tracking whale populations independently "allowed NOAA to tailor its protection actions to their individual needs."
Commercial hunting has markedly reduced the number of humpback whales, whose populations registered their lowest levels in the 1960s.
In 2015, NOAA had proposed removing 10 of the 14 populations from the endangered species list and opening a public consultation period before reaching that decision.
