NAME:
Read:
On August 30, 1821, a girl of indomitable genius was born in Laguna, Santa Catarina. Her name was Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro.
Daughter of a humble family of Azorean descent, since she was a little girl, Ana Maria showed that she had her own ideas and will. The girl spoke what she thought, and amazed everyone.
Worried about her daughter's future, the girl's mother made her marry, at age 14, a much older man.
It was then that, at the age of 18, she met the Italian guerrilla Giuseppe Garibaldi, with whom she fell in love. Fascinated by the ideals of freedom and democracy defended by Garibaldi, Ana fled with him, starting to fight side by side with her beloved on the battlefields.
Ana then became Anita. She learned to fight with swords, to use firearms. Not even pregnancies prevented her from demonstrating her bravery in several combats.
Anita married Giuseppe in 1842 in Montevideo. Together, they had four children, fought for the independence of the Republic of Rio Grande do Sul and for Italian unification – that is why she became known as the “Heroine of two worlds”.
Anita Garibaldi died of typhoid fever in Ravenna, Italy, on August 4, 1849.
