Beauty on the shores of Lake Furnas
Portuguese were the first explorers in the region and established beautiful productive farms in the first decades of the 19th century. The city is a good place to taste and buy typical Minas Gerais cachaça.
In the south of Minas, Capitólio has very interesting natural attractions, such as Trilha do Sol and Lago de Furnas. With 1,440 km², created by the Furnas dam that dammed the Rio Grande. The Furnas Dam, the largest in Brazil, was inaugurated in 1963 to prevent an energy collapse predicted for the 1960s.
The Canyons – large rocky cliffs over 20 m high –, the Lagoa Azul Waterfall and the Escarpas do Lago Spa are also mandatory stops for tourists.
