Small bird has large, strong feet, disproportionate to its size, and can walk through branch branches to capture prey..
The collared dwarf woodpecker (Picumnus temminckii) measures approximately 9 centimeters and is very similar to the barred dwarf woodpecker. The difference is noticeable only by the ocher tones in the feathers between the face and neck.
The male of the species has red spots on the forehead; in the female, they are white. The trilling song resembles the vocalization of some crickets.
Due to its small size, the bird can reach branches in narrow places, where it captures insects and larvae. Reproduction takes place in holes built in dead trees, not far from the ground. The male and female work together and take turns feeding the young.
Unlike other species, the collared dwarf woodpecker does not walk by resting its tail on the trunks. It has large, strong feet, almost disproportionate to its small size. It occurs in the forests of the southern and southeastern regions of Brazil.
