How long can a cactus go without water?

Cacti are plants extremely adapted to life in arid and desert regions. In the northeastern sertão, many species endure more than 6 months without receiving rainwater. In desert regions of South America, some can stay up to 5 years in absolute drought. According to agronomist Marina Tomioka, ________ plants are resistant because they do not have leaves – which lose a lot of water through evaporation – and because they have thorns capable of absorbing water from the dew. Thus, from one day to the next, the cacti replenish their liquid reserves, always staying hydrated.
