How do oysters make pearls?

Any foreign body (grains of sand or parasites) that invades the shell can cause irritation. As a defense mechanism, oysters coat _________ a foreign body with mother-of-pearl, a calcium substance that they expel to protect the shell. This is how pearls are formed. The largest pearl in the world, found in April 2001, is 6.2 cm long, 5.3 cm wide and 3.0 cm high. The gem weighs 169 grams.
