the amazon river

The Amazon River was discovered in 1500 by Vicente Yañez Pinzón, who named it Mar Dulce. In 1532, Francisco Orellana, the man who made the first descent into the river, changed the name to Amazonas.

It rises in the Andes Mountains, next to the Misti volcano, in southern Peru, 4,000 meters above sea level. This source was only discovered in 1971, and is known as Laguna McIntyre.

Until recently, the Nile was thought to be the longest river in the world by length. However, thanks to satellite monitoring techniques, it is now known that the Amazon is longer, at 7,025 kilometers.

In the Brazilian plain, its width is from 6 to 8 kilometers, while the depth varies from 20 to 200 meters. Near the mouth, in the Atlantic, the depth reaches up to 500 meters.

The Amazon River is the largest in the world by volume of water. In less than half a minute of flow, it could quench the thirst of all the inhabitants of the world.

It dumps 175 million liters of water per second into the Atlantic. This number corresponds to 20% of the combined flow of all rivers on Earth. In one day, the Amazon River pours more water into the Atlantic than the entire flow of the River Thames in England in a year.

8 kilometers from Manaus, the Solimões River meets the Negro River, a tributary of the Amazon River, producing the phenomenon of the Meeting of the Waters. The two large bodies of water do not mix because they have different temperatures.

The Amazon River has 1,100 tributaries.
