Bird that stands out for its predominantly yellow plumage also tends to make inclined nests to protect against rain.
The woodpecker (Colaptes campestris) measures 32 cm and can be easily identified by the color of the plumage: the sides of the face and neck are yellow and the top of the head and throat are black. The male has red stripes on his face.
The food diet is composed of insects, mainly ants and termites. The success of the hunt is due to the elimination of the secretion similar to glue, which causes the insects to become “stuck” on the tongue.
The song, varied and strong, only occurs during the reproductive period, when male and female communicate and mark territory. The elaborate nests are dug in the sloping face of the ravines, so that there is protection from the rain.
The species occurs in fields and cerrados throughout Brazil, except in the North region.
