Rodent feeds on bamboo buds and leaves and is monogamous.
Do you know the wood rat (Kannabateomys amblyonyx)? This is a shy rodent from the Atlantic Forest, which has rounded ears, bulging eyes and a long tail covered with hair that looks like thorns. As in all rodents, the presence of large incisors draws attention.
Despite being considered a mouse, it has a similar appearance to capybaras and cavies. And a curiosity: this species vocalizes. Furthermore, it is the only rodent that has monogamous associations and biparental care.
“This means that when rodents form pairs, they no longer separate, and even share their tasks, such as caring for and protecting the pups from potential predators,” says biologist Emanuelle Pass.
Still according to the specialist, the popular name is related to the life habit of the animal, which lives in bamboo and bamboo forests and feeds on leaves and shoots of these plant species.
“In addition, this little mouse is also known by other names. It is called the thorn rat, due to its extremely abundant fur that appears to be rigid like thorns. These hairs have colors that vary between tawny and rust tones,” she explains.
But if your mission is to find this little bug in nature, you need to be patient. “Despite being large (they measure about 60 centimeters and weigh more than half a kilo), they have a very shy behavior. So, they tend to hide strategically”, he says.
Currently, there is a great effort on the part of researchers to maintain the conservation of this potentially vulnerable species. “We are always looking to evolve further in research on this species. Little is known about this rodent, but all information is important for us to try to prevent this species from disappearing from nature in the future.”
