The Federal Council of Veterinary Medicine (CFMV) prohibits mutilating surgery for aesthetic purposes in domestic animals and establishes regulatory standards for the performance of surgeries in farm animals and wild.
According to Rafael Silva de Souza, veterinarian, general surgeon of small animals and advisor to the CFVM in the Federal District, although they are performed frequently, procedures such as partial conchectomy (cut of the ear), tailectomy (cut of the tail) and the removal of vocal cords from dogs and cats' nails, are prohibited by the Advice.
The specialist emphasizes that they are surgeries with only aesthetic purpose that remove characteristics of its nature from the animal, harming the well-being of the species. He recalls that mutilations are considered an environmental crime.
