“Long is a humanist chronicle of current Japan”.

The work follows Ryota, a failed writer who pays the bills as a detective

At one point, in the midst of the storm that gives title to Hirokazu Koreeda's new feature, detective Ryota (Hiroshi Abe), his son Shingo (Taiyô Yoshizawa) and his ex-wife Kyoko (Yôko Maki) run after lottery tickets carried by the wind incessant. It is a poetic and meaningful scene, in which the Japanese director tries to show his protagonist that that moment, that complicity, that union is the truly valuable prize. Not the money tickets can bring.

Not that Ryota fully understands the lesson. Because people don't change who they really are. They are imperfect. And yet, it is possible to love them and understand their pain.

And this strong humanist content is the raw material of “After the Storm”, a beautiful work by Koreeda that opens this Thursday (17) in theaters. The feature follows Ryota, a failed writer who pays the bills as a detective. Or he doesn't pay the bills, as he spends most of his money betting on races. What made ex-wife Kyoko – whose life he obsessively spies – ask for a divorce. During Japan's 23rd typhoon of the year, however, they end up trapped in the home of Yoshiko (the great Kirin Kiki), Ryota's mother, and the protagonist has his last attempt to win his family back.

The best thing about “Storm” is that Koreeda doesn't make a big moralistic drama out of it. The film is a short chronicle of contemporary Japanese society, narrated by the filmmaker with sharp sarcastic humor and an unromantic look at its protagonist.

Ryota is frustrating, immature and, at times when interacting with his son, almost unforgivable. And Koreeda doesn't try to idealize him, on the contrary: he is the target of jokes from Kyoko, her co-worker and the her own mother, who sees perfectly the flaws of the child she has, tries in vain to correct them, and loves him really so.

In the smart and flawless dialogues, you'll laugh and be moved by these characters because they're human beings that Koreeda's excellent script makes absolutely close and universal. People who weather the storm and, even without being unharmed, survive and move on. And that's the film's great wealth and trump card.
