Currently, 50 countries in the world live under a dictatorial regime. Also called “autocracies”, these nations do not allow periodic popular vote to choose rulers, nor do they allow freedom of expression. In some of them, governments claim they are democratic and even organize elections. However, opposition candidates are always threatened and end up giving up or dying “mysteriously” shortly before the election. Or the results are beyond doubtful, with several accusations of fraud.
Governments in transition between democracy and dictatorship are called anocracies or hybrids. They respect certain rights and even hold “reasonably” open elections, as is the case in Ukraine. This is also the case in Venezuela, although many think it is also a dictatorship. There, the government, supported by the majority, surrounds the rights of the minority. […]
