The species is also popularly known as the little loon or pompom. Your scientific name Tachybaptus dominicus means Dominican bird that dives fast.
It is considered the smallest grebe on the continent. It measures up to 25 centimeters and weighs about 180 grams. The eyes are light yellow that stand out making this water bird even more beautiful.
It has wings with a large white mirror that draw attention when the bird grooms its feathers or flies. Puppies have a different color. It has a face with brindle details.
It feeds on small fish, fry, tadpoles and various invertebrates. Usually he dives that can last up to 15 seconds to hook his prey. It also eats seaweed and other plant matter.
Inhabits ponds, dams and swamps. In spring, it is frequent to observe concentrations in the coastal lagoons of southern Brazil. Extremely adapted to aquatic environments, it lives in any body of water, even in very small artificial lakes. Despite its small wings, it flies between isolated lakes.
It has a wide distribution throughout the Americas […] In Brazil, it is present in all states, with less abundance in the North region. The species is not in danger of extinction.
