Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. It is transmitted from person to person by coughing, sneezing, close or direct contact with infected nasal and throat secretions. Among the symptoms are high fever, headache, malaise, cough, runny nose and reddish spots on the skin.
Currently, there are no drugs that fight the virus and treatment seeks to relieve symptoms. The main measure against measles is prevention through vaccination. And this strategy is powerful!
Before the creation of the vaccine in 1963, the world registered epidemics every two or three years and about 2.6 million deaths per year. But thanks to the vaccine, the game has turned! Estimates show that between 2000 and 2018 there was a 73% reduction in global measles deaths. This means that more than 23 million deaths were avoided during this period.
In Brazil, the National Immunization Program (PNI) provides, free of charge and routinely in the country's health services, the triple viral vaccine at 12 months of life. She ensures protection against measles, mumps and rubella. After this immunization, the recommendation is to receive the tetraviral vaccine at 15 months of age. In addition to protecting against these three diseases, viral tetra also protects against chickenpox.
Despite the success of vaccination, even today, measles kills about 100,000 people a year worldwide. And in 2019, the scenario got worse. The world has recorded the highest number of cases of the disease since 1996. There were almost 870,000 new infections. There was also a significant increase in the number of deaths, reaching more than 207,000.
That is, the disease is still a concern and, unfortunately, the concern has increased in recent years.
