Nise da Silveira was a psychiatrist who revolutionized the treatment of people with mental disorders.
Born in Maceió, on February 15, 1905, she was the studious daughter of a pianist and a mathematics teacher. She graduated from the Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia in 1926 – the only woman in a class of 157 students.
When she started working in a psychiatric hospital, Nise was against aggressive forms of treatment, such as isolation and electroshock. Often, the mentally ill suffered abuse and rejection, and were not seen as human beings. Nise took care of them, discovering different ways to give them a voice and dignity.
One of Nise's discoveries was the use of art as a form of expression for patients, who were not always able to communicate through words. She noticed that many of them drew mandalas (circular shapes), and decided to write to Carl Jung, a respected Swiss psychologist. Jung suggested that she make an exhibition of the patients' works, which was also exhibited in Switzerland. Today, the building of the institute that bears the name of Nise, in Rio de Janeiro, houses more than 350,000 works (“images of the unconscious”) by artists with mental problems.
Nise was also a pioneer in research on the help that animals can offer patients through emotional bonds.
She was a woman well ahead of her time, internationally recognized for her humanist stance and for her invaluable contribution to psychiatry, with books and scientific articles.
This is one of her recommendations: “Everyone has a little bit of madness. I'm going to make a request to you: live your imagination, because it is our deepest reality”.
She died in Rio de Janeiro in 1999. […]
