The name of the bird derives from Tupi and means “raised crest”. The species reaches an average height of 70 centimeters, can reach 90 centimeters in length and weigh up to 1.4 kilograms.
It is common in cerrados, fields and pastures, benefiting from deforestation. It lives in pairs or in small flocks. Running, it reaches over 50 km/h. It has terrestrial habits, but climbs to the top of trees to sleep.
It has a very distinctive song, which can be heard for more than a kilometer, as they are loud and long screams, which can last several minutes.
It eats from worms, insects and fruits, to small vertebrates such as rodents, reptiles, amphibians and even other species of birds, including eggs. It kills prey with its beak, as the fingers are relatively small and clawless.
It nests about five meters from the ground. It lays two eggs and the couple divides to hatch them, a period that lasts from 24 to 30 days. The calf is born with a brownish, fine and long down on the head. After two weeks, it leaves the nest with the parents, taking about four to five months to acquire adult plumage, obtaining a yellowish gray with fine dark stripes, the abdomen being a little lighter than the rest of the body and the beak and legs reddish.
The size of young people can be the same as that of adults and, to differentiate them, eye color is one of the best ways. In adults, the eyes are grayish, while in juveniles, they are yellowish, and the beak color may be darker.
