The endemic species of the Atlantic Forest is threatened with extinction due to habitat destruction.
The collared sloth (bradypus torquatus) is an endemic mammal of the Atlantic Forest, which belongs to the Bradypodidae family.
The species gets its name from the dark spot on the back of the neck, which resembles a collar. The animal usually spends 60% to 80% of the day sleeping, being more active between 9 and 21 hours.
Solitary, the collared sloth inhabits conserved forests and secondary forests, always looking for the tallest trees. It is seen on the ground only to defecate or move when it is not possible to move from one tree to another.
Reproduction takes place from September to November. A single pup is generated. During the adult phase, the mammal can measure up to 75 centimeters and weigh from 4 to 10 kilos.
Sloths usually feed on leaves, which are also responsible for quenching the animal's thirst, as all the water needed for survival is in the food it consumes.
Habitat destruction has led to the collared sloth becoming an endangered animal.
