Specialist in environmental education, Matheus Mesquita gave details about the species that feeds on pollen and likes to climb tulips.
Did you know that there are mice that feed on pollen and sleep inside flowers? These are the so-called harvest mice. They do not occur in Brazil. They live in Europe and Asia, and the routine of these small mammals is very hectic. Adapted to the urban environment, it is relatively easy to find some of them literally playing in the gardens of big cities.
According to environmental educator Matheus Mesquita, these rodents are true jugglers and are so light that even the delicate petals form little houses for them. “It's like a cocoon. A cozy environment that keeps them warm. In addition, there is everything they need, comfort and food, considering that they feed on pollen”, he says.
Another curiosity is that these animals can be very fast. “These rodents are tiny, measuring around five centimeters and, when they are caught inside flowers, they look even smaller. If you have the opportunity to observe them, you will notice that they are always climbing, doing pirouettes and having fun, they are true acrobats. No wonder people are so enchanted with them”, he explains.
The life of these mammals is very short, lasting an average of only six months. Currently, the species is not at risk of extinction.
