Donating blood is a gesture that costs nothing, saves lives and can be repeated three times a year by women and four times a year by men. The demand for blood exists throughout the year and grows during holidays and long holidays, when the risk of accidents is greatest and, therefore, there are more people needing transfusions. And, precisely in these periods, the volume of donations drops by 20%, informs Viviane Guerra, advisor to Hemominas' fundraising and registration management. She says that about 2% of the population of Minas Gerais make regular donations, less than indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO), which calculates the ideal percentage of donors between 3% and 5% of the population.
People in good health, between 18 and 60 years old (and those between 16 and 17 years old and over 60 years old under specific conditions) can donate blood. The conditions and restrictions are on the Hemominas website: http://www.hemominas.mg.gov.br. Donations can be scheduled by calling 156, in option 8.
