Otto Edward Henry Wucherer was born in Porto, Portugal, on July 7, 1820. The son of a German father and a Brazilian mother, he spent six to seven years living in Bahia, where his father was the manager of a trading house. Then he went to Germany, graduating in medicine from the University of Tübingen. He returned to Brazil in 1843, settling in Salvador.
Considered the founder of Brazilian helminthology, he was the first to use the microscope in Brazil, in the diagnosis and scientific research of diseases coming from Africa. With the English physician John Paterson, who also lived in Bahia, he identified yellow fever, absent from the country since 1686, and reintroduced by an American ship. They were also diagnosed with cholera in 1855.
[…]
Along with Paterson and the Portuguese physician Silva Lima, he decided to study medicine not from European books, but from the patients themselves. In this way, the three formed the Escola Tropicalista Baiana, which investigated several common diseases in the country.
[…]
He also researched the pathological anatomy of the disease commonly known as “ainhum”.
He died in Salvador, on May 7, 1873, a victim of cerebral apoplexy.
