What to do when people's needs or wants don't seem to fit together?
There can be arguments, angry words, silences – or even fights.
This can take a long time or a short time. Until one side wins. Until you get what you want or need and the other side gives up.
But something completely different could happen. Another kind of discussion in which both sides explain what they want or need and why… In which one listens to what the other has to say. In which they work together to solve the problem, so that both sides can have what they want or need – at least in part…
Sometimes people outside the problem can help resolve it. Say whether one side is being unfair or breaking the rules of the debate.
They can suggest ways to solve the problem so that the peace is not interrupted.
And sometimes, between two irreconcilable paths, a third path can be found. Different from what you wanted or needed at first. But good for both sides.
The third way is perhaps even better for everyone! And conflict can be the beginning of something new, good.
