Registration was made in Minas Gerais; species was named “cuca” in honor of Brazilian folklore.
Researchers discovered a new species of frog on a bromeliad leaf during an expedition to a Private Reserve Natural Heritage Site (RPPN) Chapadão Serra Negra, near the municipality of Santa Bárbara do Monte Verde, in Minas Gerais (MG).
The endemic amphibian of the Atlantic Forest was named “cuca” (Dendrophryniscus cuca), in homage to Brazilian folklore. The amphibian measuring just two centimeters did not go unnoticed by researcher Matheus de Oliveira Neves.
He says that the first record took place about 10 years ago, when he was doing his master's degree at the Federal University of Viçosa, in Minas Gerais.
“Between 2013 and 2014, I was collecting in the region. There were several days of expedition along the Serra Negra in 14 different points. On the last day of collection, almost at the end of the field study, something caught my attention on a bromeliad leaf. It was a frog. I had never seen anything like it. Subsequently, all records of the Dendrophryniscus cuca were made in bromeliads”, he says.
The genus Dendrophryniscus is endemic to the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. It does not occur in other countries. It occupies humid tropical forests and is associated with bromeliads.
Still according to the researcher, the cuca toad was only found in a high area of waterfall. “To prove that it was a new species, we carried out a molecular analysis of the amphibian's DNA and we verified which morphological characteristics the species presents that separates it from the other species of the group”, highlights.
