Congonhas

Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a title granted by Unesco since 1985, the city is home to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos. Fame is not only due to the religious issue, but also for guarding one of the greatest patrimonies artistic works of Brazil, the splendid works executed by the master Antônio Francisco Lisboa, the Aleijadinho. To learn more about this attraction, be sure to visit the Museum of Congonhas, which shows interactively and modern the various conceptions that exist in the Sanctuary of Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, together with the works of Aleijadinho.

Mining activity is the basis of the local economy, due to the rich deposits of iron ore. The Pilgrimage Museum (Congonhas Mineralogy Museum) is the right attraction if you want to learn more about the history of mining in Minas Gerais.

Among the city's natural attractions, the Água Limpa Waterfall has a natural toboggan run, perfect for amusing tourists. In Horto Florestal, trails take visitors to the top of a hill, where a lookout was built. The Lagoa da Água Preta welcomes visitors in search of the light effect created by the city lights.

In the Bom Jesus de Matosinhos Sanctuary, in the churchyard and in Passos da Paixão, there are sculptures by Aleijadinho. There are 12 prophets in soapstone and 66 figures in cedar in Passos da Paixão.
