Flagrante was made by equipment of the State Secretariat for the Environment of Mato Grosso.
Two giant armadillos, an endangered species, were filmed walking along the Transpantaneira Road, in the Mato Grosso Pantanal. The act was taken by cameras from the State Department for the Environment (Sema-MT), which are part of the Monitoring of Wild Fauna project on the Transpantaneira Road.
It is the largest and rarest of the existing armadillos in the world. This is an animal characteristic of the Cerrado, but which also inhabits other biomes in Brazil and Latin America – although in smaller numbers.
The video shows the two adult armadillos together, walking down the road. In addition to them, jaguars, tapirs and other animals are spotted.
According to Sema's environmental analyst, Marcos Roberto Ferramosca Cardoso, what drew attention was precisely to identify two giant armadillos together, during the day, since the animal has habits nocturnal.
“The presence of this animal in the region is important because it shows not only the incidence of the species, but also points out that the biome offers survival conditions for them”, explained the analyst.
According to Cardoso, it is likely that the apparition happened due to the flooding of the Pantanal, as they go to the higher parts, which are dry, dig and take shelter in burrows in the ground.
