In this adaptation of “The Teenager”, by Fyodor Dostoevsky, a young man narrates his forays into the adult world […]
An idealistic young man arrives in St. Petersburg for a stay at his parents' home. Enthusiastic about the chance to get to know his father figure better and willing to put into practice an unusual way of life, Arkadi begins to attend the family's social circles. However, as he grows closer to these people, his life takes an unexpected turn. When speculating about his father's past, Arkadi becomes involved in a tangle of suspicious stories, in which each one seems to tell only what is convenient for him.
Meanwhile, the boy receives an invitation: a job to work with Prince Sokólski, a wealthy gentleman with fragile health. The proposal generates a moral conflict, since his job is to remain idle, serving as company for the prince. And, to make matters worse, with money in hand, his values begin to crumble.
Narrated in first person, the teenager is a passionate and chaotic account of a young man's incursions into the adult world and the choices he will have to make, based on his beliefs and the incontinences of this new phase of life.
The book comes with an introductory text, a period map, an explanation of the composition of Russian names, and a list of all the characters in the novel.
