When you see a concentration of wood dust under a piece of furniture, do you immediately think of termites? Yeah, it's probably them... But not alone! And do you know why? Because termites live accompanied by trichonymphs, unicellular organisms that inhabit their intestines. This association is an example of mutualism.
Although termites ingest wood, they cannot digest it. Digestion of this material is carried out by trichonymphs. It is these microorganisms that degrade cellulose, one of the components of wood, and transform it into energy, which serves as food for the insect. But it's not just the termites that benefit as they also provide nutrients and shelter for the trichonymphs.
