It all started in 1305. King Edward I of England decreed that three dry grains of barley lined up should be considered as one inch. English shoemakers were enthusiastic about the idea and began to manufacture, for the first time in Europe, shoes in standard sizes, based on such barley grains. A shoe that measured, for example, 37 grains of barley was known as a size 37.
