The team from the NGO Museu D'Bone Collector, which works to raise awareness for the preservation of the environment, rescued the body of a dead whale with about 40 kilos of plastic bags in the stomach off the coast of the Philippines on 16 February March.
Because of the amount of plastic swallowed, the whale was barely able to feed anymore and ended up starving to death. “Since plastics occupied the entire stomach, they prevented food from passing into the intestine, where it is absorbed. In addition, dehydration contributed to causing death, as whales do not drink water like humans — the liquid is obtained from what they eat”, explains biologist Guilherme Domenichelli.
The plastic had been accumulating for so long in the whale's belly that it had even started to calcify, that is, harden from mixing with the food inside.
When in the ocean, plastic bags are often mistaken for food by marine animals. Furthermore, they can be seen as a threat to them, as the animals do not know what these objects are.
The amount of this waste is such that, according to a study carried out by the New Plastics Economy (New Plastics Economy, in Portuguese), a global initiative that works with the recycling of this material, it is possible that in 2050 there will be more waste than fish in the oceans if human beings do not take action for the environment.
