There are clouds that are white as cotton. When you see them in the sky, no one bothers to take the umbrella. The clouds that warn us that we must be prepared are dark. But why do they have this characteristic?
Storm clouds are dark simply because sunlight cannot pass through them. Called cumulonimbus, they reach up to 15 kilometers in diameter and are about a thousand meters above the ground.
Sunlight, when it hits clouds of this type, ends up being largely reflected back into space. Those who promote this reflection of light are the ice stones and the water droplets that form the cumulonimbus clouds. It's true that some of the light even passes to the inner layers of these clouds. But, as the cloud is very thick, the light is extinguished, extinguishing and… It gets dark at their base, that is, at the bottom, which is what we see from the Earth's surface.
White clouds are thinner than storm clouds. That's why they're not dark. We know that light spreads in all directions as it penetrates the cloud, which is also made up of water droplets and ice. But because white clouds are not that thick, less light is lost along the way, leaving more to emerge at the base of the cloud. That's why we see them light.
