Western culture owes a lot to the ancient Greeks. If the planet, since the end of the 19th century, celebrates, every four years, the biggest sporting event in the humanity, this is only possible because, back there, more than 2,500 years ago, the Greeks sowed the seed of Olympics.
The first historical records of the Olympics date from 776 a. C., time when the winners began to have their names registered. It was during this period that the term “Olympics” emerged, after Iftos, king of Ilia, joined forces with the monarch of Sparta, Lycurgus, and the king of Pissa, Clistenes. The covenant was sealed in the temple of Hera, located in the sanctuary of Olympia. Hence the name “Olympics”.
