In times of 4G, WhatsApp, Facebook and Pokémon GO, it's quite difficult to get students to focus on the lesson. It is up to the teachers to look for different dynamics that make the little ones manage to keep their attention in their studies. Bethany Lambeth, who teaches 8th grade math at a school in Wake County, USA, found one. a curious way to channel so much youth energy: he installed exercise bikes under the wallets of his students.
“Before, they were banging on their tables and talking to other people, but they don't do that anymore. Your feet are getting all the movement,” explains Bethany. The teacher says that performance and attention improved with the equipment, making classes much more fluid.
The experiment was installed at the end of last year, through donations and partnerships. Each piece of equipment cost US$150 – something around R$480. Although she didn't use taxpayers' money, the idea seems to have pleased US public education officials.
One idea, in the future, will be to use the tactic in Special Education classes, which have even more difficulties in concentrating. Not to mention, of course, that exercise still helps children's health. Quinn Spear, for example, is a student of Bethany's and proudly recounts that he cycled nearly 9 km in one day, burning 133 calories – all while paying attention to what he was taught.
