Because the brain is always on. It doesn't stop even when we fall asleep. During sleep, it just works in a different way, in another kind of processing. When we sleep, memories are cleared and various neuronal changes are consolidated according to recent experiences. During the period of deep sleep, it is true, there is no conscious thought, but that does not mean that the brain is not active. In dreams there is intense mental activity – unconscious, according to psychoanalysis. Even if you are not aware of the dream, your dream self knows exactly what is going on.
