The whooping cough passed. Antônio no longer coughed or walked in the mornings in the corral. Yes, he was still protected by shirts and flannels printed in blue, with naive sprigs of flowers and the faces of clowns.
But suddenly, he appeared with a very high fever, always measured by the backs of the hands placed on his forehead. Helped by the neighbors, the mother would then dip the boy into a basin of very smart water, wrapping him in thick blankets to lower the fever. Nobody knew the cause, so I suspected everything. Sadness began to haunt the house and showed itself even in the eyes of the brothers. The father stayed around, in the backyard, for some emergency, without working in the fields.
After about three days, the boy was already very prostrate, everything cleared up. Antônio thin, legs and arms thin, as if by magic, he turned into a branch of jabuticaba tree, only covered with chicken pox, all over his body. The others, unable to get close, watched their brother impatiently with such itching from a distance.
It was on this occasion that the godmother spoke for the first time: “If they had given elderberry tea, this disease would have broken out more quickly”.
But Antonio won. Days later, it was again tame as a tree after fruit: pale and ready for new flowering.
