How unpleasant it is when we can't play or have to miss school because we feel unwell. When the doctor examines us and discovers that this is a reflection of inflammation, he prescribes a type of medicine: the anti-inflammatory. Hmm… But what is inflammation, anyway, huh?
Inflammation is a form of reaction in our body. A sore throat, for example, can be the result of dryness caused by drier weather. The redness in the place is already a reflection of our body's defense. Things are more or less like this...
Substances produced by our body, such as prostaglandins, promote inflammation. Prostaglandins – if I may introduce them – are responsible for reactions like the fever and the redness we talked about in the case of sore throat inflammation. They do all of this to signal that something isn't right.
Now take note: prostaglandins are produced by another substance with an even weirder name, cyclooxygenase. Why do you need to know this? Well, because the anti-inflammatory works by blocking the action of cyclooxygenase, which, in turn, stops producing prostaglandins, thus reducing inflammation.
Oops! If prostaglandins signal that something is not right, does inhibiting their production solve the problem? In fact, the anti-inflammatory only eliminates the symptoms, such as pain and swelling, which does not always resolve the problem definitively. But it is okay to treat the inflammation to relieve the patient and then look for the source of the problem. In the case of a tooth, for example, the pain can be relieved with medicine, but the solution can be extraction (wow!).
