Text interpretation, “Threat of extinction”, aimed at 9th grade students. The text in question is by the "Tamar Project", which was created in 1980, by the former Brazilian Institute of Forestry Development-IBDF, which later became IBAMA-Brazilian Institute of Environment. Today, it is internationally recognized as one of the most successful experiences in marine conservation and serves as a model for other countries, especially because it involves coastal communities directly in its work. social and environmental. Endangered species, animals or plants, are those at risk of disappearing in the near future. Countless species have already become extinct in the last millions of years, due to natural causes, such as climate change, and inability to adapt to new survival conditions.
But today, man decisively interferes in the natural process of species extinction, through actions such as, example, destruction of habitats, exploitation of natural resources and introduction of exotic species (coming from others locations). These and other attitudes cause species decline at rates never seen in human history.
The five species of sea turtles found in Brazil are still threatened with extinction, according to criteria from the Brazilian and world lists of threatened species. Of the five, four spawn on the coast - and, because they are more exposed, they are the most threatened: bighead(Caretta caretta), comb(Eretmochelys imbricata), olive(Lepidochelys olivacea) and leather(Dermochelys coriacea).
THE green turtle(Chelonia mydas) is less exposed, as it spawns mainly on the oceanic islands (Atol das Rocas, Fernando de Noronha and Trindade), where the predatory action of man is more controlled, which contributes to the stability of its population.
Of every thousand puppies that are born, only one or two manage to reach maturity. There are countless obstacles they face to survive, even when they become juveniles and adults. But, in addition to natural predators, human actions are among the main threats to sea turtle populations, highlighting the following: incidental fishing, along the entire coast, with waiting nets, and in the open sea, with hooks and nets. drift; the photo pollution; the traffic of vehicles on the spawning beaches; the destruction of habitat for spawning by disorderly occupation of the coast; ocean pollution and global warming.
