Educator, philosopher and one of the greatest names in world pedagogy, Paulo Freire believed in the education that the student himself built, with critical thinking and political awareness.
"I am an intellectual who is not afraid to be loving." This very delicate phrase is by Paulo Freire. Have you ever heard of him? You probably know of a school named after him, after all we have more than 300 educational institutions across Brazil that pay homage to the master. But what made Paulo Freire so important?
He was born in Recife, on September 19, 1921. He was educated at home by his parents, writing with sticks in the dirt in the backyard. Over time, his passion for teaching only increased and he became one of the greatest educators in Brazil.
He developed an adult literacy method in the 1960s that valued the personal baggage and reality that each student brought to the classroom. This was very different from what was used to do with illiterate adults in Brazil at that time. Valuing students' experiences? What is that? Because of his ideas – considered subversive – Paulo Freire was imprisoned for 72 days. He had to live in exile in Chile, the United States and Switzerland.
Back in Brazil, when he was appointed secretary of education for the city of São Paulo in 1989, he put his ideas into practice.
Paulo Freire has written dozens of books, translated into over 40 languages. He has received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from 27 universities around the world, in addition to other major education awards. The loving intellectual died in São Paulo, on May 2, 1997.
