The country is in one of the regions that suffer the most tremors in the world, the Pacific Ring of Fire. The site, which is home to 450 volcanoes, is also known as the Circle of Fire and encompasses one of the largest tectonic plates in the country. About 90% of the earthquakes happened there.
The 40,000 km area is horseshoe-shaped and surrounds the Pacific basin, which also includes Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific.
Countries in this region lie in very unstable areas of plate tectonics, where earthquakes and tsunamis are common.
