The Japanese company announced that, by 2026, it will stop marketing laser printers. Instead, it will focus on devices that use an ink tank. The measure was announced on November 23.
Part of the motivation behind Epson's decision is quite noble: to preserve the environment. In 2019, the company disclosed that laser printers consume much more energy during the printing process, which makes them more harmful to the environment.
The “sisters” that use inkjet, although slower, are much more ecological. According to Epson, they produce up to 85% less carbon dioxide than lasers. Also, they have fewer components that need to be replaced.
In addition, the company is committed to sustainability. Which brings us to the other part of the motivation, the economic one: an investment of 100 billion yen (approximately R$ 3.8 billion) in sustainable innovation.
Epson even tried to make its laser printers more eco-friendly, but did not obtain a satisfactory result.
The company is working hard on the idea of offices switching from laser printers to ink tank printers. As a benefit, the company shows that they are a more economical option that weighs less on the electricity bill At the end of the month.
As for slowness, Epson announced that it is working on a new line of products that promises to print 40 to 60 sheets per minute. It's wait and see.
