With a growth of 9.6% in 12 years, Brasilia reaches the position of third largest city in Brazil in terms of population, according to the 2022 Demographic Census released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The federal capital is second only to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Last year, the population of Brasília, in the Federal District, reached the mark of 2,817,068 people, compared to 2,570,160 populationregistered in 2010.

Despite the apparent growth, these numbers were below the expectations of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). IBGE estimated that the region would have a population of 3,094,325 in 2021, which means a difference of 277,257 people.
Brasilia reached a higher position in the ranking of Brazilian cities with the largest population. In 2010, the city ranked fourth, behind São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. There was a significant change, with Salvador falling to fifth position, behind Fortaleza.
While only São Paulo and Brasília registered population growth in the last 12 years, the other three cities among the five largest presented negative variation.
São Paulo had an increase of 1.80%, Rio de Janeiro had a fall of 1.70%, Brasília had a growth of 9.60%, Fortaleza had a fall of 1.00% and Salvador had a fall of 9.60%.
In addition, the 2022 Census revealed that the Federal District has a population density of 489.01 people per square kilometer, making it the highest density among Brazilian states.
