As beautiful as shy!

It is difficult to find anyone who does not notice the beauty of this bird. The male has bright blue plumage on his back and a collar of the same color. The neck and half of the chest are purple and the wings are black. The exuberance of color, however, does not match the shy behavior of the bluebird. It seems that he brings this whimsy in the colors of his feathers just to attract the females of his species.

Speaking of them… Female bluebirds are brown and discreet, but they are very graceful and dedicated to their offspring: they build the nest, hatch the eggs and take care of the young alone.

This species prefers the highest places in the forest, such as treetops. Its food is mainly composed of fruits and seeds, and may also include some insects.

As well as its relatives, the spiders, the bluebird – when defecating, that is, making poop – disperses the seeds of the fruits that you eat, helping to spread them to more distant places and, in this way, contribute to the maintenance of Forest.

And take note of a curious fact: when flying and when fighting with other individuals, the bluebird makes noises that sound like music to our ears! Its showy plumage makes the species vulnerable to predators, who notice the color of its feathers.

But not everything is beauty in the life of the bluebird. Its showy plumage, in addition to attracting the attention of its natural predators, also attracts hunters. For centuries, males have been captured and their feathers used as ornaments. In the 17th century, a European prince, the renowned naturalist Maximilian Wied-Neuwied, came to Brazil and described in his diaries a variety of handcrafted ornaments that were produced with this bird's feathers: wreaths, flowers, bouquets, fans… Although today it is not more so common to have its feathers plucked to become an ornament, the species is still imprisoned in cages to serve as a pet. pet.

Currently, the bluebird occurs in a few protected areas of the Atlantic Forest, where deforestation and the capture of wild animals are prohibited. It is important to know this species better in nature and conserve it in your habitat.
