Study claims classes before 9 am hurt performance

It is common to see students questioning the college or school timetable. For this reason, experts decided to investigate whether the schedule interferes with the productivity of studies.

A survey analyzed the start times of classes and the frequency of students and the result was unexpected. It has been proven that classes that start before 9 am have low performance and impair students' sleep, leading to a decline in school attendance. The drop in performance does not occur in institutions that start classes after 9 am.

Class before 9 am harms the student

The publication of the study took place in Singapore, when the analysis of Nature Human Behavior and other institutions reached the conclusion that classes at universities need to start after 8 am, as the student may experience a drop in performance.

The research found that the classes in the period from 7 am to 4 pm have 10% less attendance of students who participate in the morning period. The study also revealed that students tend to wake up after the class starts, making them unable to follow the content from the beginning.

Tests

Three experiments were carried out until the proof was effective: the first test included the evaluation of the university's Wi-Fi signal. There were more than 20,000 accesses distributed to 337 courses that were on campus at that time.

Connections to classes before 8 am were 10% lower compared to connections to classes after 9 am. The first assessment, as experts have advised, is part of almost 100% of cases.

The second and third tests were similar, relying on field research by specialists who assessed class attendance: did students not attend because they were sleeping? Classes that started earlier were found to cause sleepiness in students, as nighttime sleep quality was decreased by 17%.

Although there is no contrast in the performance of the grades, there are reports of teachers who recognize the difficulty of starting a class during the early hours of the morning. Interrupting nighttime sleep and demanding tasks in the morning can impair student attendance and performance.
