The 21st was chosen and is also mentioned as the International Day against Racial Discrimination, as established by the UN (United Nations).

The day was also a landmark for the “Shaperville Massacre” in South Africa in 1960. Around 20,000 people took to the streets to protest against racial discrimination imposed by the government. that was acting when defining that black people would have to circulate only in certain places. As a result of the protest, around 69 people died from gunshots fired by the authorities.

African peoples in Brazil and Afro-Brazilian culture

Brought to Brazil during the abolitionist period to be enslaved, the African people were taken from the comfort of their nation, brought to distant lands, to be servants. From the beginning of abolition to the end, more than 4 million Africans arrived in Brazil.

Great attempts were made to extinguish the period of slavery, so it is necessary to regain awareness of historical events.

They lived in inhumane conditions vis-à-vis society, they had no rights and no voice. “Voice”, not in the plural but in the singular, as they were reduced and forgotten from the human to the cultural scope. There are several influences of Afro culture in Brazil and cannot be denied.

Faced with the questions raised today, Afro-Brazilian culture has memory. Memory of a people that cannot be forgotten but considered as a great part of Brazilian culture. March 21st will serve as memory and awareness of a people that is part of who we are as Brazilians.
