the donkey and the salt load

A salt-laden ass was crossing a river. One misstep and here he is in the water. The salt then melted and the ass rose lighter. He was all happy. A little later, being loaded with sponge on the banks of the same river, he thought that if he fell again he would be lighter and he fell on purpose in the waters. What happened? The sponges were soaked and, unable to rise, the ass drowned.
