In 2022, it is estimated that the Brazilian harvest of legumes, cereals and oilseeds could reach 261.9 million tons, according to September calculations made by the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production, which was released last Thursday, 6th, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in Rio de January.

According to the IBGE, the result of this production ends up becoming the new historical record for something that began to be produced in 1975. This is a growth of 3.4%, or 8.7 million tons, compared to last year.
According to the agriculture manager, Carlos Alfredo Guedes, the main product that bears this title is corn. Its second crop had an increase of 35.5% compared to 2021.
“Production is recovering from weather problems in 2021, such as the lack of rain. This recovery helps explain production in 2022. In addition, there was also growth in the second crop corn area, encouraged by the good prices that producers have achieved in recent years,” said Guedes.
Four regions had an estimated growth. They were: Midwest (11.4%), North (11%), Southeast (10.8%) and Northeast (10.3%). The only one that presented some type of decrease was the South (14.6%).
The constant climate changes generate an impact on the final results published, according to what was evaluated by the researcher. “The lack of rain caused by the La Niña phenomenon had a greater impact on the southern region and Mato Grosso do Sul. Goiás and Mato Grosso were not affected by climate problems. With that, we have the Midwest region – which is quite representative in the production of grains – with a growth of 11.4% ”, he explained.
Wheat
Wheat production was estimated at 9.6 million tons. There was a 0.9% drop compared to August but there was also a 23% increase compared to 2021. According to the agriculture manager, production is not self-sufficient.
“We consume around 12 or 13 million tons and, therefore, we will still have to import it, but much less than in previous years. This production of 9.6 million tons is a record for Brazil. Ukraine and Russia are two major exporters of wheat. With the war, prices are high. Producers, with an eye on this improvement in prices, have increased areas here in the country”, he assessed.
Coffee
Based on the survey, it was estimated that Brazilian coffee production for 2022 – including its two species, arabica and canephora – either 3.1 million tons or 52.3 million bags of 60 kilos. With that, it reveals a drop of 2.7% compared to August but also an increase of 6.6% compared to 2021.
“Arabica coffee production should have grown more this year as a result of the positive biennial harvest. This did not happen, as last year we had a very cold winter. Even with the occurrence of frosts in the coldest regions where this product is grown. This reduced the production potential of the 2022 harvest”, said research manager Carlos Barradas.
Soy
This product is considered the biggest commodity in Brazil.
Its production remained at around 119.5 million tons. This number represents a monthly increase of 0.6%; however, there is a retraction of 11.4% when compared to that obtained in the previous year, so there was a drop of 15.6% in the average income. “Although the harvested area grew by 4.9%, weather problems brought down soy production in 2022”, pointed out Barradas.
Regions
The volume of production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds, among the major regions, was broken down as follows: Midwest, 129.8 million tons (49.6%); South, 65.1 million tons (24.8%); Southeast, 27.6 million tons (10.6%); Northeast, 25.4 million tons (9.7%) and North, 14 million tons (5.3%).
