Whales are mammals belonging to the order of cetaceans. They have an internal bone structure similar to that of terrestrial mammals. Their fins are atrophied locomotor limbs, reminiscent of the period when their ancestors were quadrupeds. The tail is large and constitutes the main movement organ of whales.
A whale's nostrils are located at the top of its head as it rises to the surface, which condenses on contact with the atmosphere to form a column of water droplets.
Hearing is the most important sense of whales. It is known that they produce at least two types of sounds: those that intervene in their echolocation system and vocalizations.
The echolocation sounds work as a kind of biological sonar, while the vocalizations are the well-known songs of the whales, which seem to be a means of communication between the members of the whale. species.
The body is covered with a layer of fat that helps the animal float and maintain heat. This fat also works as a means of storing energy.
The whale can live 30 years on average, but a whale that reached 50 years has already been recorded.
