According to a survey by economist Ana Amélia Camarano, coordinator of the research on population and family of the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea), the elderly contribute, on average, with 53% of the income familiar. Retirements and pensions, paid by Social Security, end up serving not only the elderly, but also their family members. And most receive benefits of a minimum wage. It is little, but it is with this money that many families resist poverty and survive. And, in these cases, the elderly are a factor of social balance and not a burden.
